Six arrested for stealing £1million using Student Loan phishing scam

On Thursday(Dec 8,2011), Six Suspects(four men+Two women) arrested for Student Loan Phishing scam by the Met's Police Central e-Crime Unit . Using the compromised Data , criminals have stolen over £1 million.
PCeU investigators were alerted to the scam in August 2011, and discovered that a criminal network were targeting students through Government loan schemes by sending out emails inviting unsuspecting individuals to update details on their student loan account via a link to a convincing but bogus website.
Said in Police Report.

According to the Metropolitan Police Central e-crime Unit (PCeU), cybercriminals targeted students with messages pretending to be related to their Government loan, and asking them to update their details.

Once the victim accessed the phishing site ,the criminals were able to gain unauthorized access to victim's bank accounts and extract money ranging from £1000 to £5000 at a time.

The suspects, four men and two women, have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and Computer Misuse Act and money laundering offences, and are being held at central London, Manchester and Bolton police stations.
