Google and Facebook fell victims of $100 Million scam

The tech giants Google and Facebook have confirmed that they fell victim to an alleged $100 million scam. It was reported that a Lithuanian man had been charged over an email phishing attack against  "two US-based internet companies." 

Evaldas Rimasauskas, 48, was accused of being behind the scam. From 2013 to 2015, he deceived the companies into wiring payments to an account managed by him. 

When he was arrested Google and Facebook were not named as the victims, but 27 April, Fortune, an investigation company has confirmed the victims' identities: Google and Facebook. 

The US Department of Justice said, "fraudulent phishing emails were sent to employees and agents of the victim companies, which regularly conducted multi-million dollar transactions with (the Asian) company.”

He is also accused of forging invoices, contracts, and letters. 

A spokesperson for Google said, "We detected this fraud against our vendor management team and promptly alerted the authorities.”

"We recouped the funds and we're pleased this matter is resolved,” they added.

While Facebook and Google have not confirmed the amount of money they have lost due to attack.

A spokeswoman for Facebook said: "Facebook recovered the bulk of the funds shortly after the incident and has been cooperating with law enforcement in its investigation."
