A group of cybercriminals are allegedly selling private messages of 81,000 Facebook users, and claim to have personal information about millions of accounts.
According to an Investigation report done by BBC's Russian Service, most of the accounts are based in Ukraine and Russia, but some are from different countries as well, including the U.S., the UK and Brazil. Hackers have posted an ad offering account details and personal conversations in just 10 cents per account, but now the advert has been taken offline.
The data stolen by the hackers include holiday pictures and videos, private messages, email address, and other sensitive personal data.
However, Facebook said that their security had not been compromised. The hackers might have obtained the data through malicious browser extensions.
"We have contacted browser-makers to ensure that known malicious extensions are no longer available to download in their stores," said Facebook executive Guy Rosen.
"We have also contacted law enforcement and have worked with local authorities to remove the website that displayed information from Facebook accounts."
