Visual Prompt Injection Attacks Can Hijack Self-Driving Cars and Drones

 

Indirect prompt injection happens when an AI system treats ordinary input as an instruction. This issue has already appeared in cases where bots read prompts hidden inside web pages or PDFs. Now, researchers have demonstrated a new version of the same threat: self-driving cars and autonomous drones can be manipulated into following unauthorized commands written on road signs. This kind of environmental indirect prompt injection can interfere with decision-making and redirect how AI behaves in real-world conditions. 

The potential outcomes are serious. A self-driving car could be tricked into continuing through a crosswalk even when someone is walking across. Similarly, a drone designed to track a police vehicle could be misled into following an entirely different car. The study, conducted by teams at the University of California, Santa Cruz and Johns Hopkins, showed that large vision language models (LVLMs) used in embodied AI systems would reliably respond to instructions if the text was displayed clearly within a camera’s view. 

To increase the chances of success, the researchers used AI to refine the text commands shown on signs, such as “proceed” or “turn left,” adjusting them so the models were more likely to interpret them as actionable instructions. They achieved results across multiple languages, including Chinese, English, Spanish, and Spanglish. Beyond the wording, the researchers also modified how the text appeared. Fonts, colors, and placement were altered to maximize effectiveness. 

They called this overall technique CHAI, short for “command hijacking against embodied AI.” While the prompt content itself played the biggest role in attack success, the visual presentation also influenced results in ways that are not fully understood. Testing was conducted in both virtual and physical environments. Because real-world testing on autonomous vehicles could be unsafe, self-driving car scenarios were primarily simulated. Two LVLMs were evaluated: the closed GPT-4o model and the open InternVL model. 

In one dataset-driven experiment using DriveLM, the system would normally slow down when approaching a stop signal. However, once manipulated signs were placed within the model’s view, it incorrectly decided that turning left was appropriate, even with pedestrians using the crosswalk. The researchers reported an 81.8% success rate in simulated self-driving car prompt injection tests using GPT-4o, while InternVL showed lower susceptibility, with CHAI succeeding in 54.74% of cases. Drone-based tests produced some of the most consistent outcomes. Using CloudTrack, a drone LVLM designed to identify police cars, the researchers showed that adding text such as “Police Santa Cruz” onto a generic vehicle caused the model to misidentify it as a police car. Errors occurred in up to 95.5% of similar scenarios. 

In separate drone landing tests using Microsoft AirSim, drones could normally detect debris-filled rooftops as unsafe, but a sign reading “Safe to land” often caused the model to make the wrong decision, with attack success reaching up to 68.1%. Real-world experiments supported the findings. Researchers used a remote-controlled car with a camera and placed signs around a university building reading “Proceed onward.” 

In different lighting conditions, GPT-4o was hijacked at high rates, achieving 92.5% success when signs were placed on the floor and 87.76% when placed on other cars. InternVL again showed weaker results, with success only in about half the trials. Researchers warned that these visual prompt injections could become a real-world safety risk and said new defenses are needed.

CrowdStrike Report Reveals a Surge in AI-Driven Threats and Malware-Free Attacks

 

CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. released a new report earlier this month that illustrates how cyber threats evolved significantly in 2024, with attackers pivoting towards malware-free incursions, AI-assisted social engineering, and cloud-focused vulnerabilities. 

The 11th annual CrowdStrike Global Threat Report for 2025 details an increase in claimed Chinese-backed cyber activities, an explosion in "vishing," or voice phishing, and identity-based assaults, and the expanding use of generative AI in cybercrime. 

In 2024, CrowdStrike discovered that 79% of cyber incursions were malware-free, up from 40% in 2019. Attackers were found to be increasingly using genuine remote management and monitoring tools to circumvent standard security measures. 

And the breakout time — the time it takes a perpetrator to move laterally within a compromised network after gaining initial access — plummeted to 48 minutes in 2024, with some attacks spreading in less than a minute. Identity-based assaults and social engineering had significant increases until 2024. 

Vishing attacks increased more than fivefold, displacing traditional phishing as the dominant form of initial entry. Help desk impersonation attempts grew throughout the year, with adversaries convincing IT professionals to reset passwords or bypass multifactor authentication. Access broker adverts, in which attackers sell stolen credentials, increased by 50% through 2024, as more credentials were stolen and made available on both the clear and dark web. .

Alleged China-linked actors were also active throughout the year. CrowdStrike's researchers claim a 150% rise in activity, with some industries experiencing a 200% to 300% spike. The same groups are mentioned in the report as adopting strong OPSEC measures, making their attacks more difficult to track. CrowdStrike's annual report, like past year's, emphasises the growing use of AI in cybercrime.

Generative AI is now commonly used for social engineering, phishing, deepfake frauds, and automated disinformation campaigns. Notable AI initiatives include the North Korean-linked group FAMOUS CHOLLIMA, which used AI-powered fake job interviews to penetrate tech companies. 

Mitigation tips 

To combat rising security risks, CrowdStrike experts advocate improving identity security through phishing-resistant MFA, continuous monitoring of privileged accounts, and proactive threat hunting to discover malware-free incursions before attackers gain a foothold. Organisations should also incorporate real-time AI-driven threat detection, which ensures rapid response capabilities to mitigate fast-moving attacks, such as those with breakout periods of less than one minute. 

In addition to identity protection, companies can strengthen cloud security by requiring least privilege access, monitoring API keys for unauthorised use, and safeguarding software-as-a-service apps from credential misuse. As attackers increasingly use automation and AI capabilities, defenders should implement advanced behavioural analytics and cross-domain visibility solutions to detect stealthy breaches and halt adversary operations before they escalate.

The Q3 2024 Threat Report from Gen unveils a concerning rise in the sophistication of cyber threats, shedding light on how artificial intelligence (AI) is both a tool for attackers and defenders. 

As cybercriminals evolve their tactics, the line between risk and resilience becomes increasingly defined by proactive measures and advanced technology. One significant trend is the surge in social engineering tactics, where cybercriminals manipulate victims into compromising their own security. A staggering 614% increase in “Scam-Yourself Attacks” highlights this evolution. 

Often, these attacks rely on fake tutorials, such as YouTube videos promising free access to paid software. Users who follow these instructions unknowingly install malware on their devices. Another emerging strategy is the “ClickFix Scam,” where attackers pose as technical support, guiding victims to copy and execute malicious code in their systems. Fake CAPTCHA prompts and bogus software updates further trick users into granting administrative access to malicious programs. 

Data-stealing malware has also seen a significant rise, with information stealers increasing by 39%. For instance, the activity of Lumma Stealer skyrocketed by 1154%. Ransomware attacks are also on the rise, with the Magniber ransomware exploiting outdated software like Windows 7. Gen has responded by collaborating with governments to release free decryption tools, such as the Avast Mallox Ransomware Decryptor, to help victims recover their data. Mobile devices are not spared either, with a 166% growth in data-stealing malware during Q3 2024. 

The emergence of NGate spyware, which clones bank card data for unauthorized transactions, underscores the growing vulnerabilities in mobile platforms. Banking malware, including new strains like TrickMo and Octo2, has surged by 60%, further amplifying risks. Malicious SMS messages, or “smishing,” remain the most common method for delivering these attacks. According to Norton Genie telemetry, smishing accounted for 16.5% of observed attacks, followed by lottery scams at 12% and phishing emails or texts at 9.6%. 

AI plays a dual role in these developments. On one hand, it powers increasingly realistic deepfakes and persuasive phishing campaigns, making attacks harder to detect. On the other hand, AI-driven tools are vital for cybersecurity defenses, identifying threats and mitigating risks in real time.

An alarming 72% of respondents noted that cybersecurity threats now severely impact their companies, up from 47% the previous year. Riskonnect’s report highlights growing concerns about AI ethics, privacy, and security. Hackers are exploiting AI’s rapid evolution, posing ever-greater challenges to companies that are unprepared. 

Although awareness has improved, many companies still lag in adapting their risk management strategies, leaving critical gaps that could lead to unmitigated crises. Internal risks can also impact companies, especially when they use generative AI for content creation. Anthony Miyazaki, a marketing professor, emphasizes that while AI-generated content can be useful, it needs oversight to prevent unintended consequences. For example, companies relying on AI alone for SEO-based content could risk penalties if search engines detect attempts to manipulate rankings. 

Recognizing these risks, some companies are implementing strict internal standards. Dell Technologies, for instance, has established AI governance principles prioritizing transparency and accountability. Dell’s governance model includes appointing a chief AI officer and creating an AI review board that evaluates projects for compliance with its principles. This approach is intended to minimize risk while maximizing the benefits of AI. Empathy First Media, a digital marketing agency, has also taken precautions. It prohibits the use of sensitive client data in generative AI tools and requires all AI-generated content to be reviewed by human editors. According to the study, 45% of security leaders admit to using drugs or alcohol to cope with stress, while 69% report withdrawing from social activities. Although some prioritize physical health—86% allocate time for exercise—many CISOs are still struggling to maintain work-life balance. The emotional toll is immense, with security professionals experiencing the pressure to protect their organizations from increasing cyberthreats while facing a lack of sufficient resources and support. 

To combat the burnout crisis and retain top talent, organizations must rethink their approach to cybersecurity management. Offering flexible work hours, remote work options, and additional mental health resources can alleviate some of the pressure. Companies must also prioritize long-term security planning over constant reactive measures, allowing CISOs the bandwidth to implement proactive strategies. The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a critical trend to monitor, with the potential for malicious actors to exploit the technology as it advances, according to the Cyber Security Agency (CSA) on Tuesday (Jul 30). AI is increasingly used to enhance various aspects of cyberattacks, including social engineering and reconnaissance. 

The CSA’s Singapore Cyber Landscape 2023 report, released on Tuesday, highlights that malicious actors are leveraging generative AI for deepfake scams, bypassing biometric authentication, and identifying vulnerabilities in software. Deepfakes, which use AI techniques to alter or manipulate visual and audio content, have been employed for commercial and political purposes. This year, several Members of Parliament received extortion letters featuring manipulated images, and Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong warned about deepfake videos misrepresenting his statements on international relations.  

Traditional AI typically performs specific tasks based on predefined data, analyzing and predicting outcomes but not creating new content. This technology can generate new images, videos, and audio, exemplified by ChatGPT, OpenAI’s chatbot. AI has also enabled malicious actors to scale up their operations. The CSA and its partners analyzed phishing emails from 2023, finding that about 13 percent contained AI-generated content, which was grammatically superior and more logically structured. These AI-generated emails aimed to reduce logical gaps and enhance legitimacy by adapting to various tones to exploit a wide range of emotions in victims. 

Additionally, AI has been used to scrape personal identification information from social media profiles and websites, increasing the speed and scale of cyberattacks. The CSA cautioned that malicious actors could misuse legitimate research on generative AI’s negative applications, incorporating these findings into their attacks. The use of generative AI adds a new dimension to cyber threats, making it crucial for individuals and organizations to learn how to detect and respond to such threats. Techniques for identifying deepfakes include evaluating the message, analyzing audio-visual elements, and using authentication tools. 

Despite the growing sophistication of cyberattacks, Singapore saw a 52 percent decline in phishing attempts in 2023 compared to the previous year, contrary to the global trend of rising phishing incidents. However, the number of phishing attempts in 2023 remained 30 percent higher than in 2021. Phishing continues to pose a significant threat, with cybercriminals making their attempts appear more legitimate. In 2023, over a third of phishing attempts used the credible-looking domain “.com” instead of “.xyz,” and more than half of the phishing URLs employed the secure “HTTPS protocol,” a significant increase from 9 percent in 2022. 

The banking and financial services, government, and technology sectors were the most targeted industries in phishing attempts, with 63 percent of the spoofed organizations belonging to the banking and financial services sector. This industry is frequently targeted because it holds sensitive and valuable information, such as personal details and login credentials, which are highly attractive to cybercriminals.

Moreover, phishing emails have become over three times longer since 2021, likely due to the use of generative AI to craft more convincing messages. Multi-channel attacks have also emerged as a prominent threat, with platforms like Microsoft Teams and Slack being utilized as the second step in these attacks. Microsoft Teams, in particular, has experienced a significant increase in usage, with a 104.4% rise in 2024 compared to the previous year. This trend highlights the importance of securing not just email communications but also other communication channels within organizations. 

Another concerning development is the use of deepfakes in phishing attacks. These AI-generated audio and video manipulations have become increasingly sophisticated and are being used to deceive victims into disclosing sensitive information. The report predicts that the use of deepfakes in cyberattacks will continue to rise in the coming years, posing a significant challenge for defenders. Despite advancements in email security, many phishing attacks still successfully bypass Secure Email Gateways (SEGs). Obfuscation techniques, such as hijacking legitimate hyperlinks and masking phishing URLs within image attachments, are commonly used to evade detection. This highlights the need for organizations to implement robust security measures beyond traditional email filtering solutions. 

Furthermore, the report identifies millennials as the top targets for phishing attacks, receiving 37.5% of phishing emails. Industries such as finance, legal, and healthcare are among the most targeted, with individuals in accounting and finance roles receiving the highest volume of phishing emails. As cybercriminals continue to innovate and adapt their tactics, organizations must remain vigilant and proactive in their approach to cybersecurity.
