BreachForums Database Breach Exposes Details of Over 324K User Accounts

 

The newest version of the infamous BreachForums cybercrime marketplace has reportedly experienced another security lapse, with its user database table appearing online.

BreachForums refers to a succession of underground hacking forums commonly used for buying, selling, and leaking stolen data, as well as offering access to compromised corporate networks and other illicit cyber services. The platform emerged after RaidForums was taken down by law enforcement and its alleged operator, known as “Omnipotent,” was arrested.

Despite facing previous data breaches and repeated law enforcement interventions, BreachForums has consistently resurfaced under new domains. This pattern has led some observers to speculate that the forum may now be operating as a law-enforcement honeypot.

Recently, a website bearing the name of the ShinyHunters extortion group published a 7Zip archive titled breachedforum.7z. The archive includes three files:
  • shinyhunte.rs-the-story-of-james.txt
  • databoose.sql
  • breachedforum-pgp-key.txt.asc
A spokesperson for the ShinyHunters extortion group told BleepingComputer that they are not connected to the site hosting the archive.

The file breachedforum-pgp-key.txt.asc contains a private PGP key created on July 25, 2023, which BreachForums administrators previously used to sign official communications. Although the key has been exposed, it is protected by a passphrase, preventing misuse without the correct password.

Meanwhile, the databoose.sql file is reportedly a MyBB users table (mybb_users) holding details of 323,988 accounts. The leaked data includes usernames, registration timestamps, IP addresses, and other internal forum information.

According to BleepingComputer’s review, most IP addresses in the dataset resolve to a loopback address (127.0.0.9), limiting their investigative value. However, around 70,296 records do not use this local IP and instead resolve to public addresses. These entries could pose operational security risks to affected users and may be useful to law enforcement or cybersecurity analysts.

The most recent registration date in the leaked database is August 11, 2025—the same day the previous BreachForums instance at breachforums[.]hn was taken offline following arrests linked to its alleged operators. On that day, a ShinyHunters member posted in the “Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters” Telegram channel, alleging that BreachForums was a law-enforcement trap, a claim later denied by forum administrators.

In October 2025, the breachforums[.]hn domain was formally seized after being repurposed for extortion campaigns tied to large-scale Salesforce data thefts attributed to the ShinyHunters group.

The current BreachForums administrator, operating under the alias “N/A,” has confirmed the latest incident. According to the administrator, a backup of the MyBB users table was briefly left in an unsecured directory and downloaded only once.

“We want to address recent discussions regarding an alleged database leak and clearly explain what happened,” N/A wrote on BreachForums.

“First of all, this is not a recent incident. The data in question originates from an old users-table leak dating back to August 2025, during the period when BreachForums was being restored/recovered from the .hn domain.”

“During the restoration process, the users table and the forum PGP key were temporarily stored in an unsecured folder for a very short period of time. Our investigation shows that the folder was downloaded only once during that window.”

While N/A advised members to rely on disposable email addresses and emphasized that most IPs were local, the exposed data could still attract interest from investigators.

Following publication of the article, cybersecurity firm Resecurity informed BleepingComputer that the website hosting the archive has now been updated to include the passphrase for BreachForums’ private PGP key. Another independent security researcher confirmed that the disclosed password successfully unlocks the key.

BreachForums Taken Down by FBI and French Authorities as LAPSUS$-Linked Group Threatens Salesforce Data Leak

 



U.S. and French law enforcement agencies have seized the latest version of BreachForums, a cybercrime platform known for hosting stolen databases and leaked information. The takedown was carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Department of Justice, and French cybercrime authorities, who placed an official seizure notice on the site on October 9.

This development comes just hours before an extortion deadline announced by a threat group calling itself Scattered LAPSUS$ Hunters, which had threatened to leak data allegedly stolen from Salesforce and Salesloft if ransom demands were not met by October 10.

The seizure was first noticed on Telegram before it became official. A threat actor using the alias “emo” had observed that BreachForums’ domain was using Cloudflare name servers associated with previously seized FBI sites, suggesting law enforcement action was imminent.

Following the seizure, Scattered LAPSUS$ Hunters confirmed the action on its Telegram channel through a PGP-signed message, claiming that all their BreachForums-related domains and backend infrastructure were taken offline and destroyed. The group, however, asserted that its members had not been arrested and that their Tor-based data leak site remained active.

“The era of forums is over,” the message read, warning members to maintain operational security and avoid new BreachForums clones, which the group claimed could be “honeypots” operated by law enforcement.


Compromised Infrastructure and Data

The group stated that during the seizure, all BreachForums database backups dating from 2023 to the present were compromised, along with escrow and server systems. They also alleged that their onion hidden service was affected because the underlying infrastructure had been seized and destroyed.

Despite this, Scattered LAPSUS$ Hunters insisted that the takedown would not affect their planned Salesforce data leak campaign. The group reiterated that the October 10 deadline for victims to comply with their ransom demands remained unchanged.

This marks the fourth major seizure in the history of BreachForums and its predecessors, including the earlier RaidForums. Both forums have been repeatedly targeted by global law enforcement operations and linked to several high-profile arrests over the years.

The group also revealed that the widely known administrator “pompompurin,” believed to have launched BreachForums after RaidForums’ closure, had merely been a “front,” suggesting that the forum’s operations were coordinated by a wider network of individuals from the start.


What Lies Ahead

While the seizure has temporarily disrupted the group’s clearnet operations, cyber experts caution that criminal forums often migrate to the dark web or encrypted channels to continue their activities. Authorities are expected to pursue further investigations in the coming weeks to identify and apprehend those involved.

For cybersecurity professionals and enterprises, it's high time to give importance to monitoring data exposure risks and staying alert to potential secondary leaks, especially when extortion groups remain active through alternate platforms.



BreachForums Founder Resentenced to Three Years After Appeal

 

In a significant legal outcome for the cybersecurity landscape, Conor Fitzpatrick, the founder of the notorious BreachForums underground hacking site, has been resentenced to three years in federal prison after appeals overturned his previous lenient sentence. 

Fitzpatrick, who operated under the alias Pompompurin, was originally arrested in March 2023 for running the forum and faced multiple charges: access device conspiracy, access device solicitation, and possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). He pleaded guilty to all counts in January 2024 and was initially handed 17 days in jail and 20 years of supervised release, a punishment prosecutors sharply criticized as dramatically insufficient given the gravity of his crimes. 

Appeals and resentencing 

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit agreed with prosecutors, declaring the original sentence “substantively unreasonable” for failing to serve proper sentencing purposes. This led to Fitzpatrick’s resentencing and a harsher three-year prison term.

BreachForums, which emerged in March 2022 as a successor to the dismantled RaidForums, became one of the most active online marketplaces for stolen data and compromised credentials. At its peak, it hosted more than 14 billion individual records and counted 330,000 members among its user base. U.S. authorities emphasized that Fitzpatrick “personally profited from the sale of vast quantities of stolen information,” ranging from private personal details to sensitive commercial data. 

Despite repeated law enforcement takedown attempts, BreachForums managed to resurface multiple times, illustrating the resilience of such underground communities. The arrest of Baphomet, the admin who took over after Fitzpatrick was detained, did little to slow the forum; it slipped into the hands of ShinyHunters, a cybercriminal group linked to several high-profile data breaches. 

As of mid-September 2025, BreachForums is offline, with its maintainers announcing a decision to “go dark”—a phrase that suggests not just temporary shutdown, but a possible strategic retreat rather than a permanent closure. This mirrors the recent moves of other infamous cybercrime collectives like Lapsus$ and Scattered Spider, who have also vanished from the digital underground, at least for now. 

Context and implications 

The case of Conor Fitzpatrick and BreachForums highlights the challenges of prosecuting transnational cybercrime and the difficulties law enforcement faces in permanently dismantling underground hacking forums. Despite impressive numbers—14 billion records, hundreds of thousands of members—the legal outcome for operators is often uncertain, with initial sentences sometimes appearing disproportionately light compared to the scale of the harm caused.

The resentencing of Fitzpatrick marks a tightening stance by the U.S. Department of Justice, signaling that courts are now more willing to impose harsher penalties on those who profit from stolen data and operate platforms that enable large-scale cybercrime. Yet, even as high-profile forums like BreachForums disappear, the enduring cycle of takedown, migration, and reemergence of similar platforms suggests that the broader threat will persist as long as demand for stolen data remains high.

ICAO Investigates Potential Data Breach Amid Cybersecurity Concerns

 

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a United Nations agency tasked with creating global aviation standards, has disclosed an investigation into a potential cybersecurity incident. Established in 1944, ICAO works with 193 member states to develop and implement aviation-related technical guidelines. The agency announced its inquiry on Monday, following reports of unauthorized access linked to a well-known cybercriminal group targeting international organizations.  

In its statement, ICAO confirmed it is examining allegations of a security breach and has already implemented precautionary measures to address the issue. While the organization did not provide specific details, it assured the public that a comprehensive investigation is underway. Additional updates will be shared once the preliminary analysis is complete. The investigation coincides with claims by a hacker using the alias “natohub,” who posted on BreachForums, a well-known hacking forum, alleging they had accessed and leaked ICAO’s data. 

According to the claims, the leak comprises 42,000 documents containing sensitive personal information, including names, dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and employment records. Another source suggested the leaked archive is approximately 2GB and contains data linked to 57,240 unique email accounts. ICAO has not verified the authenticity of these claims but has emphasized the seriousness with which it is handling the situation. 

This development follows a pattern of cyberattacks on United Nations agencies in recent years. In April 2024, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched an investigation into a ransomware attack reportedly orchestrated by the 8Base group. Similarly, in January 2021, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) experienced a breach that exposed over 100,000 records containing personally identifiable information. Earlier, in July 2019, UN networks in Vienna and Geneva suffered a significant breach through a SharePoint exploit. 

That attack compromised sensitive data, including staff records, health insurance details, and commercial contracts. A senior UN official later described the incident as a “major meltdown.” These recurring incidents highlight the increasing vulnerability of global organizations to cyber threats. Despite their critical roles in international operations, such institutions remain frequent targets for cybercriminals. 

This underscores the urgent need for robust cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive data from exploitation. As ICAO continues its investigation, it serves as a reminder of the evolving threats facing international organizations in a rapidly digitizing world. Enhanced vigilance and collaboration are essential to safeguarding global systems against future cyberattacks.

Security Researcher Outsmarts Hackers with Fake Ransomware Tool

 

The debate surrounding the ethics and practicality of "hacking back" remains a heated topic within the cybersecurity community. When organizations face cyberattacks, is retaliating against the attacker a viable option? While opinions differ, one fact remains clear: breaking the law is breaking the law, regardless of intent.

However, in a fascinating case of strategic ingenuity rather than retaliation, a security researcher and penetration tester successfully infiltrated a notorious dark web criminal marketplace. This was less an act of hacking back and more a bold example of preemptive defense.

Quoting American philosopher Robert Maynard Pirsig, Cristian Cornea, the researcher at the heart of this operation, opened his riveting Medium post with, “Boredom always precedes a period of great creativity.” Inspired by these words, Cornea devised a clever honeypot strategy to target potential ransomware hackers frequenting the BreachForums marketplace on the dark web.

His plan revolved around creating a fake ransomware tool called the "Jinn Ransomware Builder," designed to lure cybercriminals. This supposed tool offered features to help bad actors deploy ransomware attacks. In reality, it was a honeypot—an elaborate trap with some real functionalities but embedded with hardcoded and backdoored command-and-control callbacks.

“Jinn Ransomware Builder is actually a honeypot,” Cornea explained, “but some of the features presented above are real.” For instance, the tool could initiate a remote connection and open a process with a server-hosted “CmD.eXE” executable. Other features, such as multi-language support and AES encryption, were merely designed to make the tool appear more authentic and appealing to malicious actors.

Cornea emphasized that his actions were performed within a controlled and simulated environment, ensuring no laws were broken. “I strictly discourage anyone else from executing such actions themselves,” he warned. He stressed the importance of staying on the ethical side of hacking, noting that the line between good and bad hacking is dangerously thin.

This operation highlights the creativity and strategic thinking ethical hackers use to combat cybercrime, reinforcing that innovation and legality must go hand in hand.

Critical npm Account Takeover Vulnerability Sold on Dark Web

 

A cybercriminal known as Alderson1337 has emerged on BreachForums, offering a critical exploit targeting npm accounts. This vulnerability poses a significant threat to npm, a crucial package manager for JavaScript managed by npm, Inc., a subsidiary of GitHub. Alderson1337 claims this exploit can enable attackers to hijack npm accounts linked to specific employees within organizations. 

The method involves embedding undetectable backdoors into npm packages used by these employees, potentially compromising numerous devices upon updates. This exploit could have widespread implications for organizational security. Instead of sharing a proof of concept (PoC) publicly, Alderson1337 has invited interested buyers to contact him privately, aiming to maintain the exploit’s confidentiality and exclusivity. If executed successfully, this npm exploit could inject backdoors into npm packages, leading to extensive device compromise. 

However, npm has not yet issued an official statement, leaving the claims unverified. The incident primarily impacts npm Inc., with npmjs.com being the related website. While the potential repercussions are global, the specific industry impact remains undefined. Account takeover (ATO) vulnerabilities represent severe risks where cybercriminals gain unauthorized access to online accounts by exploiting stolen credentials. These credentials are often obtained through social engineering, data breaches, or phishing attacks. 

Once acquired, attackers use automated bots to test these credentials across various platforms, including travel, retail, finance, eCommerce, and social media sites. Users’ reluctance to update passwords and reusing them across different platforms increase the risk of credential stuffing and brute force attacks. Such practices allow attackers to access accounts, potentially leading to identity theft, financial fraud, or misuse of personal information. To mitigate ATO attack risks, experts recommend adopting strong password management practices, including using unique, complex passwords for each account and enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever possible. Regular monitoring for unauthorized account activities and promptly responding to suspicious login attempts are also crucial for maintaining account security. 

While Alderson1337’s claims await verification, this incident underscores the ongoing challenges posed by account takeover vulnerabilities in today’s interconnected digital landscape. Vigilance and collaboration across the cybersecurity community are essential to mitigating these threats and preserving the integrity of online platforms and services.

Cybercriminal Group UNC5537 Strikes with Major Data Breaches

 

In recent weeks, the cybercriminal group UNC5537 has made significant waves. This ransomware gang, potentially linked to ShinyHunters or Scattered Spider, stole over 560 million customer records from Ticketmaster. On May 28, they listed this data for sale on their revamped leak site, BreachForums, with a price tag of $500,000. Just two days later, the group claimed to have obtained 30 million account records from Santander Bank in Spain, demanding $2 million for the data. Both companies confirmed the breaches after these announcements.

A June 10 analysis by Mandiant, an incident-response firm now part of Google, revealed that these data leaks, along with at least 163 other breaches, were not due to system vulnerabilities but rather the exploitation of stolen credentials and inadequate multifactor authentication (MFA) controls. According to Mandiant, no evidence indicates that the breaches stemmed from Snowflake's enterprise environment. Instead, all incidents are traced back to compromised customer credentials.

While implementing MFA could have prevented the data theft from Snowflake's systems, the companies involved have broader issues beyond this single control. Businesses must ensure visibility into their attack surfaces, promptly disable accounts of former employees and contractors, and minimize entry points for attackers. Chris Morgan, senior cyber threat intelligence analyst at ReliaQuest, emphasizes that attackers often exploit basic security lapses. "Targeting the low-hanging fruit — in this case, insecure credentials — can be achieved with little effort from the threat actor but provides ample opportunities," he notes.

Key Lessons from Recent Cloud Breaches

1. Start With MFA and Then Go Beyond

There is significant room for improvement in MFA adoption. Despite reports showing that 64% of workers and 90% of administrators use MFA, over 60% of organizations still have at least one root user or administrator without MFA enabled. According to Ofer Maor, co-founder and CTO at Mitiga, achieving consistent and verifiable MFA implementation is crucial. He suggests that companies enforce and require MFA, disable non-SSO logins, and enhance security measures with device- or hardware-based authentication for sensitive infrastructure.

2. Use Access Control Lists to Limit Authorized IP Addresses

Organizations should implement access control lists (ACLs) to restrict user access to cloud services or at least review access logs daily for anomalies. Jake Williams, a faculty analyst at IANS Research, recommends restricting IP addresses for cloud infrastructure access and emphasizes the importance of access reviews to identify unexpected access points.

3. Maximize Visibility Into Cloud Services

Continuous monitoring of applications, log data, access activity, and data aggregation services is essential for detecting and preventing attacks. Organizations need to alert on specific behaviors or threats, which could have identified the cybercriminals' attempts to access cloud data, says Brian Soby, CTO and co-founder at AppOmni.

4. Don't Rely on Your Cloud Providers' Defaults

Cloud providers often prioritize usability over security, so relying solely on their default settings can be risky. For example, Snowflake's default settings do not require MFA, making it easier for attackers with compromised credentials to gain full access. Companies must go beyond these defaults and enforce higher security standards.

5. Check Your Third Parties

Even if a company does not directly use Snowflake or another cloud service, third-party providers might, exposing their data to risk. Ensuring that all service providers handling company data follow proper security measures is essential, as highlighted by IANS Research's Williams. Reaching out to service providers to confirm their security practices is crucial in protecting data in today's complex supply chain environment.

D-Link Confirms Data Breach, After Employees Suffer Phishing Attack


Taiwan-based networking equipment manufacturer, D-Link recently revealed to have suffered a data breach in which it lost information linked to its network. The data was then put up for sale on illicit sites, one being BreachForums.

Reportedly, the hackers claim to have stolen the company’s source code for D-View network management software. The company has also compromised millions of personal data entries of its customers and employees, along with that of its CEO. 

The compromised data includes the victim’s names, addresses, emails, phone numbers, account registration dates, and the users' last sign-in dates.

A thread participant noted that the data appeared to be very old after releasing samples of 45 stolen records with timestamps between 2012 and 2013.

The attacker stated, "I have breached the internal network of D-Link in Taiwan, I have 3 million lines of customer information, as well as source code to D-View extracted from system[…]This does include the information of MANY government officials in Taiwan, as well as the CEOs and employees of the company."

The stolen data has been available on the illicit forums since October 1st, with the hackers demanding a ransom of $500 for the stolen client data and purported D-View source code.

Data Stolen From a “Test Lab” System

According to D-Link, the security lapse happened as a result of a worker falling for a phishing scam, which gave the attacker access to the company's network.

After realizing what had transpired, the company quickly shut down possibly impacted systems in reaction to the hack, and all user accounts used for the investigation — except two — were disabled. 

D-Link further noted that the hackers have also gained access to one of its product registration systems when it was running on an old D-View 6 system, which reached its end of life in 2015, in what D-Link described as a "test lab environment,"

However, D-Link did not make it clear as to why the end-of-life server was still running on the company’s network and was subsequently exposed to the Internet for the past seven years.

D-Link confirmed that the compromised system only had about 700 records, with information on accounts that had been open for at least seven years, in contrast to the attacker's assertion that millions of users' data had been stolen. 

"Based on the investigations, however, it only contained approximately 700 outdated and fragmented records that had been inactive for at least seven years," D-Link stated. "These records originated from a product registration system that reached its end of life in 2015. Furthermore, the majority of the data consisted of low-sensitivity and semi-public information."

D-Link believes the threat actor intentionally altered the timestamps of recent logins in order to give the impression that more recent data theft occurred. The majority of the business's current clients aren't anticipated to be affected by this issue, the company added.
