Google Sues Ex-Employee for Leaking Pixel Chip Trade Secrets Online

 


Google has filed a lawsuit against Harshit Roy, a former employee, accusing him of leaking sensitive information about the company's chip designs. The lawsuit, filed in a Texas federal court, alleges that Roy, who worked as an engineer at Google from 2020 to 2024, disclosed confidential details about Pixel processing chips on social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter) and LinkedIn. 
 
According to the complaint, Roy captured internal documents containing proprietary chip specifications before resigning in February 2024. After leaving Google, he moved from Bangalore, India, to Austin, Texas, to pursue a doctoral program at the University of Texas. 
 

The lawsuit claims that Roy:   

 
- Shared these confidential documents publicly, violating his confidentiality agreement with Google.  
- Posted statements such as, “Don’t expect me to adhere to any confidentiality agreement,” and “Empires fall, and so will you,” along with images of internal documents.   
- Ignored multiple takedown requests from Google and continued posting proprietary information online.  
- Tagged competitors like Apple and Qualcomm in some of his posts, allegedly drawing attention to the leaked information. 
 
Google asserts that the leaked materials contained trade secrets critical to its operations. The disclosures reportedly led to media outlets publishing stories based on the leaked information, further exacerbating the breach. 
 
Jose Castaneda, a spokesperson for Google, emphasized the company's commitment to addressing the situation. “We discovered that this former employee unlawfully disclosed numerous confidential documents. We are pursuing legal action to address these unauthorized disclosures, as such behavior is completely unacceptable,” Castaneda stated. 
 

Google is seeking:   

 
  • Monetary damages to compensate for the breach.   
  • A court order to prevent Roy from further distributing or using the leaked information. 

As part of the legal proceedings, a judge issued a temporary restraining order on Wednesday, prohibiting Roy from sharing additional proprietary details. Google argues that such measures are necessary to:   
 
  • Protect its intellectual property.   
  • Maintain trust within its operations.

Former Google Employee Charged with Stealing AI Secrets

 

A former Google software engineer has been charged with stealing the company's artificial intelligence trade secrets while surreptitiously working for two Chinese companies, the Justice Department announced Wednesday. 

Linwei Ding, a Chinese national, was arrested in Newark, California, for four charges of federal trade secret theft, each punishable by up to ten years in prison. 

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the case against Ding, 38, at an American Bar Association conference in San Francisco. Garland, along with other law enforcement leaders, has repeatedly warned about the threat of Chinese economic surveillance as well as the national security concerns posed by developments in artificial intelligence and other novel technologies.

“Today’s charges are the latest illustration of the lengths affiliates of companies based in the People’s Republic of China are willing to go to steal American innovation,” FBI Director Christopher Wray noted in a statement. “The theft of innovative technology and trade secrets from American companies can cost jobs and have devastating economic and national security consequences.” 

Google said it came to the conclusion that the employee had stolen "numerous documents" and had referred the case to law enforcement. 

“We have strict safeguards to prevent the theft of our confidential commercial information and trade secrets,” Google spokesman Jose Castaneda explained. “After an investigation, we found that this employee stole numerous documents, and we quickly referred the case to law enforcement. We are grateful to the FBI for helping protect our information and will continue cooperating with them closely.”

Artificial intelligence is the primary battleground for high-tech competitors, and who dominates can have far-reaching commercial and security repercussions. In recent weeks, Justice Department leaders have warned that foreign foes may use AI technologies to target the United States. 

Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco stated in a speech last month that the administration's multi-agency Disruptive Technology Strike Force would prioritise AI enforcement, and Wray told a conference last week that AI and other novel technologies had made it easier for attackers to try to interfere with the American political process. 

The indictment, unsealed Wednesday in the Northern District of California, alleges that Ding, who was hired by Google in 2019 and had access to sensitive information regarding the firm's supercomputing data centres, began uploading hundreds of files to a personal Google Cloud account two years ago. 

According to prosecutors, Ding was offered the post of chief technology officer at an early-stage technology business in China that advertised its use of AI technology and gave him a monthly salary of around $14,800, plus an annual bonus and company stock, just weeks after the theft started. The indictment says Ding travelled to China to attend investor meetings and seek funding for the company. 

In January, the FBI filed a search warrant at Ding's house and seized his electronic equipment, followed by an additional warrant for the contents of his personal accounts, which contained more than 500 distinct files of classified data that investigators claim he stole from Google.

Progressive Leasing Cyberattack: Sensitive Data Stolen

Progressive Leasing, a well-known company that specializes in product leasing, has unexpectedly become the victim of a devastating cyberattack that has resulted in the unauthorized collection of private data. Our team is working diligently alongside our cybersecurity experts and with law enforcement to investigate and respond to this incident. Importantly, there has been no major operational impact to any of Progressive Leasing’s services as a result of this incident, and PROG Holdings’ other subsidiaries have not been impacted. The investigation into the incident, including identification of the data involved, remains ongoing.”

Hackers Sell Classified Data of Missile Firm MBDA, NATO Launches Investigation


Hackers claim classified data on sale

A cybercrime gang is selling confidential data which was stolen from MBDA Missile Systems (A European Firm.) For the users' information, MBDA is a European company that makes missiles and other weapons. 

It was established in 2001 from a merger of British, Italian, and French companies. MBDA is the world's second largest missile maker, the first being Boeing. 

The company has three main product lines- air-to-surface missiles, air-to-air missiles, and surface-to-air missiles. The weapons are used by the militaries of more than 40 countries. 

About MBDA 

MBDA's headquarters are in Paris, France. The company has manufacturing setups in Britain, Spain, France, and Italy. It has more than 13,000 employees. 

Unknown hackers claim that they have confidential military data accessed from MBDA after a successful data attack. 

As observed by HackRead.com, in the beginning, threat actors using Russian and English hacking platforms were selling around 80 GB of stolen data for 15 BTC (approx $294,000).

Company admits that data breach happened 

But, on August 29th, the gang lowered the price to 1BTC ($19,000) for data worth 70GB. On the other hand, BBC, MBDA, has admitted that part of its data were hacked after breaching an external hard disk. 

NATO has launched an investigation into selling top-secret weapon and missile data files online. MBDA is collaborating with investigation authorities in Italy, as it is the place where the data attacks happened. 

The investigation is focusing on one of the firm's suppliers. One should note that NATO is among MBDA's clients. A NATO representative said that they are assessing claims relating to data allegedly stolen from MBDA. 

He also said that there's no confirmation that the NATO network was compromised. The firm says that it followed all required measures to protect its networks. 

MBDA'S Stand

It insists that the data compromise happened many weeks ago and the breached data is not sensitive or classified. MBDA denies the hacking group's claims that they are selling confidential military data. 

No hacking of our secure networks has occurred. MBDA can confirm that there is no protectively marked data from MBDA involved, said MBDA. 

HackRead reports, "MBDA further explained that it refused to yield to the hackers’ ransom demands, which is why they are spreading misinformation on the internet to force the company to pay the ransom. However, the company won’t give in and vowed to take all legal actions against the blackmailers."
