How to Protect Your Accounts from 2FA Vulnerabilities: Avoid Common Security Pitfalls

 

Securing an account with only a username and password is insufficient because these can be easily stolen, guessed, or cracked. Therefore, two-factor authentication (2FA) is recommended for securing important accounts and has been a mandatory requirement for online banking for years.

2FA requires two distinct factors to access an account, network, or application, which can be from the following categories:
  • Knowledge: Something you know, like a password or PIN.
  • Possession: Something you have, such as a smartphone or security token like a Fido2 stick.
  • Biometrics: Something you are, including fingerprints or facial recognition.
For effective security, the two factors used in 2FA should come from different categories. If more than two factors are involved, it's referred to as multi-factor authentication. While 2FA significantly enhances security, it isn't completely foolproof. Cybercriminals have developed methods to exploit vulnerabilities in 2FA systems.

1. Man-in-the-Middle Attacks: Phishing for 2FA Codes
Despite the secure connection provided by Transport Layer Security (TLS), attackers can use various techniques to intercept the communication between the user and their account, known as "man-in-the-middle" attacks. A common approach involves phishing pages, where attackers create fake websites that resemble legitimate services to trick users into revealing their login credentials. These phishing sites can capture not only usernames and passwords but also the 2FA codes, allowing attackers to access accounts in real time. This type of attack is highly time-sensitive, as the one-time passwords used in 2FA typically expire quickly. Despite the complexity, criminals often use this method to steal money directly.

2. Man-in-the-Browser Attacks: Malware as a Middleman
A variation of man-in-the-middle attacks involves malware that integrates itself into the victim’s web browser. This malicious code waits for the user to log in to services like online banking and then manipulates transactions in the background. Although the user sees the correct transfer details in their browser, the malware has altered the transaction to divert funds elsewhere. Notable examples of such malware include Carberp, Emotet, Spyeye, and Zeus.

Prevention Tip: When authorizing transactions, always verify the transfer details, such as the amount and the recipient's IBAN, which are typically sent by banks during the 2FA process.

3. Social Engineering: Tricking Users Out of Their 2FA Codes
Attackers may already have access to usernames and passwords, possibly obtained from data breaches or through malware on the victim's device. To gain the second factor needed for access, they may resort to direct contact. For instance, they may pose as bank employees, claiming to need 2FA codes to implement a new security feature. If the victim complies, they unknowingly authorize a fraudulent transaction.

Prevention Tip: Never share your 2FA codes or authorizations with anyone, even if they claim to be from your bank or another trusted service. Legitimate service representatives will never ask for such confidential information.

Understanding these threats and remaining vigilant can significantly reduce the risks associated with 2FA vulnerabilities.

Hackers Breach ISP to Poison Software Updates With Malware

 

A Chinese hacking group, known as StormBamboo, has compromised an internet service provider (ISP) to distribute malware through automatic software updates. This cyber-espionage group, also called Evasive Panda, Daggerfly, and StormCloud, has been active since at least 2012, targeting organizations in China, Hong Kong, Macao, Nigeria, and various countries in Southeast and East Asia. 

On Friday, cybersecurity researchers from Volexity revealed that StormBamboo exploited insecure software update mechanisms that did not verify digital signatures. This allowed the group to deploy malware on Windows and macOS devices instead of the intended updates. 

They did this by intercepting and modifying DNS requests, directing them to malicious IP addresses. This method delivered malware from their command-and-control servers without needing user interaction. 

"Volexity observed StormBamboo targeting multiple software vendors, who use insecure update workflows, using varying levels of complexity in their steps for pushing malware. Volexity notified and worked with the ISP, who investigated various key devices providing traffic-routing services on their network. As the ISP rebooted and took various components of the network offline, the DNS poisoning immediately stopped," the researchers added. 

For example, StormBamboo used 5KPlayer update requests to push a backdoored installer from their servers. Once the target's system was compromised, the hackers installed a malicious Google Chrome extension, ReloadText, which stole browser cookies and email data. Volexity noted that StormBamboo targeted multiple software vendors with insecure update processes. The company worked with the ISP to investigate and resolve the issue, immediately stopping the DNS poisoning once the network components were rebooted. 
 
In April 2023, ESET researchers observed StormBamboo using the Pocostick (MGBot) Windows backdoor by exploiting the update mechanism for Tencent QQ. In July 2024, Symantec found the group targeting an American NGO in China and several organizations in Taiwan with new Macma macOS and Nightdoor Windows malware versions. 

Although the exact method was unclear, it was suspected to be a supply chain or adversary-in-the-middle attack. This incident highlights the importance of secure update mechanisms to prevent such cyber-attacks.

FritzFrog’s Evolution: Exploiting Log4Shell Vulnerability Reveals Alarming Tactics

 

In a startling development, the notorious FritzFrog botnet, which first emerged in 2020, has undergone a significant transformation by exploiting the Log4Shell vulnerability. Unlike its traditional approach of focusing on internet-facing applications, this latest variant is now aggressively targeting all hosts within a victim's internal network, according to recent findings by Akamai researchers, a leading cybersecurity and content delivery network provider. 

Originally recognized for its use of brute-force attacks on SSH to compromise servers and deploy cryptominers, FritzFrog has adopted a new campaign named "Frog4Shell." This campaign leverages the Log4Shell vulnerability, a flaw in the widely used Log4j web tool, discovered in 2021. Despite extensive global patching efforts initiated by governments and security companies, the Log4Shell bug remains a persistent threat. 

Frog4Shell represents a paradigm shift in FritzFrog's tactics. The malware now goes beyond the conventional approach of compromising high-profile internet-facing applications. Instead, it meticulously scans and reads system files on compromised hosts to identify potential targets within internal networks, particularly vulnerable Java applications. 

This evolution is particularly concerning as it exposes neglected and unpatched internal machines, exploiting a circumstance often overlooked in previous security measures. Even if organizations have patched their high-profile internet-facing applications, FritzFrog's latest variant poses a risk to the entire internal network. 

Akamai, a leading cybersecurity and content delivery network provider, has observed over 20,000 FritzFrog attacks and identified more than 1,500 victims over the years. The malware's latest features include enhanced privilege escalation capabilities, evasion tools against cyber defences, and the potential for incorporating additional exploits in future versions. 

While approximately 37% of infected nodes are located in China, the exact location of the FritzFrog operator remains to be determined. This strategic ambiguity suggests an effort to mask the true identity or origin of the threat actor. 

As FritzFrog continues to evolve and adapt, organizations are urged to prioritize comprehensive patching strategies encompassing not only internet-facing assets but also internal hosts. The ongoing threat landscape underscores the importance of staying vigilant against sophisticated botnet tactics and proactively securing networks to mitigate potential risks associated with Log4Shell and the advanced exploits employed by FritzFrog.

Linux Malware Records a New High in 2022


While more and more devices are adopting Linux as their operating system, the popularity of the software has nonetheless attracted cyber-criminals. According to recent reports, the number of malware aimed at the software increased dramatically in 2022. 

As per the reports from observations made by Atlas VPN based on data from threat intelligence platform AV-ATLAS, as many as 1.9 million Linux malware threats were observed in 2022, bringing the figure up 50% year-on-year. 

The reports further claimed that most of the Linux malware samples were discovered in the first three months of the year. 

 Secure Operating System

In Q1 2022, researchers identified 854,690 new strains. The number later dropped by 3% in Q2, detecting 833,065 new strains. 

The number of new detections fell 91% to 75,841 in the third quarter of the year, indicating that Linux malware developers may have taken their time off. The numbers increased once more in the fourth quarter of the year, rising by 117% to 164,697. 

Despite the researcher’s observations, Linux remains one of the “highly secure operating systems.” 

“The open-source nature of Linux allows for constant review by the tech community, leading to fewer exploitable security vulnerabilities. Additionally, Linux limits administrative privileges for users and compared to more widely used operating systems like Windows, it still has less malware targeting it,” the researchers added. 

While threat actors will not stop chasing flaws in the world’s fifth most popular operating systems, businesses and consumers alike must also be on the lookout, the researchers concluded. 

Although Linux is not as popular as Windows or macOS, it is still a widely used operating system. From Android devices (which are built on Linux) to Chromebooks, video cameras, and wearable devices, to all kinds of servers (web servers, database servers, email servers, etc.) there are more than 32 million endpoints operating on Linux.
