The attack begins with a phishing email containing an HTML attachment disguised as a routine document, such as an invoice. To deceive users and evade email security scanners, the HTML file is compressed within a ZIP archive. This extra layer of obfuscation reduces the file size for quicker transmission, avoids detection by some email scanners, and adds a step for users, potentially bypassing simpler security measures. Notably, this campaign has been observed in limited instances.


HTML Attachment Mechanics

Once the HTML attachment is opened, it triggers a complex attack by abusing standard web protocols to exploit Windows system functionalities. A critical component of the HTML code is the `<meta http-equiv="refresh"` tag, which automatically reloads the page and redirects to a new URL with zero delay, making the redirection instant and unnoticed by the user. Additionally, an anchor tag serves as a fallback mechanism, ensuring the user is still at risk even if the automatic redirect fails.


Exploitation of the Search Protocol

When the HTML file loads, browsers typically prompt users to allow the search action as a security measure. The redirection URL uses the `search:` protocol, allowing applications to interact directly with Windows Explorer's search function. The attackers exploit this protocol to open Windows Explorer and perform a search with parameters they crafted. These parameters direct the search to look for items labelled as "INVOICE," control the search scope to a specific directory, rename the search display to "Downloads" to appear legitimate, and hide their malicious operations using Cloudflare’s tunnelling service.


Execution of Malicious Files

After the user permits the search action, Windows Explorer retrieves files named "invoice" from a remote server. Only one item, a shortcut (LNK) file, appears in the search results. This LNK file points to a batch script (BAT) hosted on the same server. If the user clicks the file, it could trigger additional malicious operations. At the time of analysis, the payload (BAT) could not be retrieved as the server was down, but the attack demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of exploiting system vulnerabilities and user behaviour.

To prevent exploitation of the `search-ms` and `search` URI protocols, one mitigation strategy is to disable these handlers by deleting the associated registry entries. This can be achieved using specific commands.

FBI Alerts of Rise in Attacks Targeting DeFi Platforms

 

The FBI is alerting of an increase in cryptocurrency theft attacks on decentralised finance (DeFi) platforms.

According to the agency, criminals are exploiting the increased interest in cryptocurrency, as well as the complex functionality and open-source nature of DeFi platforms, to carry out nefarious activities.

According to the FBI, cybercriminals are stealing virtual currency and causing investors to lose money by utilising security flaws in the smart contracts that govern DeFi platforms. Smart contracts, defined as self-executing contracts containing the terms of an agreement between a buyer and a seller within their lines of code, are present throughout the decentralised blockchain network.

DeFi platforms accounted for roughly 97% of the $1.3 billion in cryptocurrencies stolen by cybercriminals between January and March 2022, an increase from 72% in 2021 and 30% in 2020.

According to the FBI, cybercriminals have also initiated flash loans to trigger an exploit in the DeFi platform's smart contracts (resulting in $3 million in cryptocurrency losses), exploited a signature verification bug in a DeFi platform's token bridge (resulting in $3 million in cryptocurrency losses), and tampered cryptocurrency price pairs (to steal $35 million in cryptocurrency).

Before investing, investors should research DeFi platforms, protocols, and smart contracts to identify potential risks and ensure that the DeFi investment platform's code has been audited at least once.

Furthermore, they should be cautious of DeFi investment pools with short timeframes for joining and rapid deployment of smart contracts, as well as the dangers posed by crowdsourced solutions in terms of bug hunting and patching.

According to the FBI, DeFi platforms should implement real-time analytics, monitoring, and code testing to address vulnerabilities and possibly shady activity, as well as an incident response plan that includes informing investors of any suspicious activity, including smart contract exploitation.

Post-quantum Cryptography Achieves Standardization Milestone

 

The first four standardised protocols for post-quantum cryptography have been released, providing the foundation for the creation of "future-proof" apps and web services. 

Last Monday, the US federal government's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced a quartet of recommended protocols as part of a continuing standardisation process. The chosen encryption algorithms will be included in NIST's post-quantum cryptography standard, which is scheduled to be completed within the next two years. 

Four more algorithms are currently being considered for inclusion in the standard. According to NIST, for most use cases, two basic algorithms should be implemented: CRYSTALS-KYBER (key-establishment) and CRYSTALS-Dilithium (digital signatures). 

In the event that one or more approaches prove insecure, more than one algorithm for each use case is being sought as a backup. NIST recommends CRYSTALS-Dilithium as the principal method for digital signatures, with FALCON for applications that require smaller signatures than Dilithium can offer. SPHINCS, a third algorithm, is slower than the other two but was approved since it is based on a distinct mathematical process and so gives a possibility to increase variety. Dustin Moody of NIST discussed why another round of selection was required.

“Of the four algorithms we selected, one is for encryption and three are for digital signatures,” Moody told The Daily Swig. 

“Of the four algorithms that we will continue to study in the fourth round, all four are encryption algorithms. The primary motivation for this is to find a non-lattice-based signature scheme which is suitable for general purpose use to be a backup for our lattice-based signature algorithms we are standardizing (Dilithium and Falcon),” Moody added. 

He continued: “Our current NIST public-key standards cover encryption and signatures. So that is what our standardization process was targeted for – to replace the vulnerable cryptosystems in those standards. Other functionalities may be considered in the future.” 

The ongoing quest for next-generation cryptographic systems is required since present encryption protocols, such as RSA, rely on solving mathematical problems that are beyond the capabilities of even the most powerful conventional computers. Sufficiently powerful quantum computers, which operate on a fundamentally different paradigm than today's PCs or servers, may be capable of cracking today's public key encryption techniques. Increasing the key length alone will not suffice to counter this possible danger, necessitating the creation of post-quantum cryptography methods. 

Decrypt later, store now

Despite the fact that the present generation of quantum computers is mostly experimental and hampered by engineering hurdles, attackers may be planning for their future availability using "store-now-decrypt-later" assaults.If such attacks are effective, a rising volume of normally encrypted financial, government, commercial, and health-related data will be vulnerable to attack by suitably powerful quantum computers. 

Quantum computers handle computational tasks by relying on the features of quantum states, such as superposition, interference, or entanglement, rather than the basic binary states (0 or 1) of traditional computers. When paired with quantum algorithms, the technology might solve some mathematical problems, such as integer factorization, in a manageably short period, posing a danger to current encryption systems that rely on the current intractability of such issues. Quantum-resistant algorithms are based on arithmetic problems that both traditional and quantum computers should struggle to solve.
